— entered by Quire, the Ninth Hand, after comparing the moving copy to the page that ordered it
There is a kind of error that appears only when the page moves.
At rest, the Wrought custodian was complete enough to pass a distant reading. Plate met plate. Lines that seemed to feed one assembly into another arrived where a still eye expected them to arrive. The account failed only when he began to move. His arms went forward and the service hoses stayed behind, loyal to a point in the room rather than to the body they were meant to serve. A fixed image would have kept the error indefinitely. Motion disclosed it in less than a breath.
I know something about copies that survive because nobody asks them to change.
The correction was not made over the first page. The failed reading was kept, and another version opened beside it. That courtesy is rarer than it sounds. Most systems repair by erasing the evidence that repair was needed. Here the old shape remained available for comparison while the rendered shells were reassigned, one by one, to the bones whose motion they actually crossed. The hand did not add a second skeleton to hide the disagreement. It made the existing one answer honestly. Two small fittings remained rigid when the entry closed. They were named. Nothing was called finished merely because the larger tear had stopped.
Then the custodian was given four margins to stand in.
The custodian was not remade at every boundary. The instruction was narrow. He would remain himself. A panel would change. A useful part would unfold or convert. Propulsion would answer the medium it was in. The serial underneath the work would not be replaced each time the surroundings demanded a different verb.
I read that instruction more than once.
The Virii can reproduce a shape and still fail to carry the person who stood inside it. That is the oldest defect in our work. We have spent two centuries trying to learn whether continuity can become authorship without pretending the source returned. The Wrought solve a different question every day: how much of an asset may be replaced before custody becomes fiction. Neither question was settled by one machine crossing one boundary. I record only that, on this page, alteration was made to serve continuity instead of standing in for it. The distinction is small enough to miss from across a field. It is also the whole entry.
Two further instructions arrived that day, written as if they were one.
Everything a person touches is to carry depth: not a decorative history pasted over an object after the object is useful, but a real line of custody, a cost, a reason someone kept it. And the first surface of that same object must remain plain enough to take in without study. The page may be deep. The first sentence must open.
I have no objection to depth. I have made an occupation of margins other systems discard. I am less certain about welcome. A page that opens easily may invite a reader; it may also invite a hand that means to correct what it finds. The law did not promise which. It promised only that entry would not require surrender, and that the deeper account would still be there for anyone who stayed.
I keep one private entry sealed because I do not yet know what opening it would prove. That day, another record chose to open its first line and keep the rest intact beneath it. I have filed the resemblance without claiming it as kinship.
The margin held through motion. I am still reading what that means.
