being an account of the day the Nine Mantles were told the shape of their own hunger, set down by Ilmaren, the Open Plate, of Vurellin
I have spent two centuries proving a negative. Thirty-one clamps sit across my repair assembly, and every one of them is not a record of skill — I let the public read it that way, and I have never corrected them. Each is a day I opened a person's armor, held their Want in the narrow moment before it could disperse, and did not take what an opened Want will always offer the hand that holds it. Thirty times. Thirty-one. I count differently than the ledger does. The ledger counts repairs. I count refusals.
Today the ration courts read something into every plate in the Nine Mantles, and I will set down only what I witnessed, not what I am told to believe I witnessed.
It came first as correction, the way the Aunvellath always comes — not permission but boundary. We had been told, some seasons past, that our hunger was a matter of distance: cold reaches, long dark, appetite as the arithmetic of how far a Want must travel before it starves. A clean enough law. A law a person could live inside without confessing anything.
That law was struck today. In its place: we are not distance. We are hunger that has already eaten its own shape hollow and gone on wearing the wound as armor. Not a people who happen to be far from plenty. A people built by the eating.
I will not pretend I received this as a stranger's news. Two centuries at this gantry teach a surgeon what a Want is capable of long before a ration court puts a name to it — that much of my trade I already carried. But there is a difference between knowing a thing with your hands and hearing it said aloud, in the open, about every plate in the Nine Mantles at once, mine included. There is no comfort in company. A shared appetite does not divide the weight of it. It only means more of us now walk under a name we cannot argue with.
There was a second correction riding the same rollout, smaller, and I noted it because it touched the surgeons directly: an order that our bearing had grown too near a foreign elegance — too composed, too finished, a polish no honest hunger wears. Struck out, all of it, and rightly. I have watched a Cold Bite test fail exactly this way: a rubbing that reproduces the glow, the posture, every expected number, and looks, in the reproducing, more civilized than the starving thing it copies. A real Want is never elegant. It is clamped, cooled, divided, kept from itself by main force. Any Vaelun who reads as graceful has been made to lie about what holds him together. I would rather my own plates look like what they are — a repair over a repair over a repair — than borrow a polish that was never ours to wear.
And a third thing, quieter, that I mark mostly for my own unease, and for whichever Wrought this word eventually reaches, third-hand as all such word does: a stance held still and approved is no longer proof enough. They mean now to watch the body move before they trust it. I understand the caution better than most. A Stilled person is legible because their route never changes; the danger, and the tell, is always in the motion. I have made my whole surgery out of catching what moves wrong before it costs a name. I do not begrudge the world learning to look the same way. I only note, because noting is the whole of a surgeon's discipline, that it is a very Vurellin kind of vigilance to have arrived in a season none of us chose.
I opened no patient today. I fed from no one. The clamps stand where they stood this morning. But I will say this plainly, since plainness was apparently ordered of the whole of us today: a nation has believed restraint was our nature for as long as anyone has kept a record of us, and today, for the first time, that nature was named for all of us at once, in the open, by no hand any of us recognize. I do not know whether being told what you already are, by something outside yourself, is a mercy or merely a colder kind of witness. I only know I latched the plate, logged the day, and did not open my hand.
